GhanaGhana is one of the most successful countries in West-Africa. Ghana has developed into a highlight of West African travel. It is home to the Ashanti tribe. English, Official language of Ghana, one of only a handful of anglo- speaking countries in the predominately French- speaking region of West Africa. The country once known as the Gold Coast has other assets that are as good as gold: lovely beaches, lively nightlife, good roads, variety of landscapes and some of the friendliest people on the continent. In short, Ghana is a safe, beguiling introduction to West Africa.

The coast towns of Ghana played an important role in the days of the slave trade and there are many forts that remind you of this period. The forts and the beaches are the prime attraction of this area. Elmina, Cape coast , Shama and Dixcove - where you can sleep on the beach or in a fort - are among the hot spot on the coast. Ghana has managed not merely to retain a strong sense of national identity, but actually to boost its economy and infrastructure. The people of Ghana are well educated and proud of their country - it has good schools, a thriving press and one of the highest economic growth rates on the continent.

In the centre of the country Kumasi has a huge market and great opportunities for buying art and handicrafts. Although the city is wonderful and abuzz, it can be disorienting, hot and crowded. The area around is perfect for day tripping. The main sight in the north is probably Mole Game Reserve which is off the beaten track but worth your while.
